Reselling Clothes- Profitable Or Nah?

As discussed in the previous post, I purged most of my closet. Considering I had some brand new items with tags on it, I decided to try my luck and sell to Clothes Mentor. If you continue reading you will see what I mean about that🧐

Clothes Mentor is a second hand shop where people sell their gently used clothes to the store. The store then resells those items at a low price. They have a variety of brands of clothes (Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Chico’s, etc). I mostly shop Clothes Mentor and sprinkle in Old Navy, Macy’s and outlet stores like Banana Republic and Nike.

I sorted my clothes by sellable clothes and Goodwill piles. T-shirts from Old Navy, old t-shirts from random events, clothes that have slight wear all go to the Goodwill pile. Clothes with tags or barely worn were boxed up to sell to the Clothes Mentor.  Some of the requirements for clothes to be purchased by Clothes Mentor include: no worn signs (beading, holes, stains, etc), laundry prior to selling, current styles (within 2 years). Also depending on the time of year, certain items are more likely to be purchased. For example, selling Fall and Winter clothes to Clothes Mentor in July has a greater likelihood of being accepted because that's when they start building the collection for the next season. All items need to be in a structured container like a cardboard box or laundry basket. All of these guidelines were kept in mind while I sorted to maximize the acceptance of all the clothes.

I then set an appointment to sell my items. I bought 3 boxes to be sold. The appointment took about 45 minutes. I ran a couple of errands nearby while they sorted. When I returned I was disappointed to find out that only 7 items were accepted and only for $17. The excuse was most of the clothes were winter clothes and they are not accepting clothes for winter because they still have a winter inventory. However some of the stuff accepted was fall. I also know that they give you a ⅓ of what they would resell for.  For example, a shirt averages $15 in the store, you would get 5 bucks for it. I haven't had a good acceptance rate in the past however this time, I had a lot of stuff with the tags on it and great condition items bought within the last two years. I took the majority of my clothes back and will consider taking it to a consignment shop. Consignment shops pay a higher percentage and only pay once the item is sold. I will try that option with the remaining boxes and let you all know what happens.

What do you do with clothes that no longer fit or no longer need?
