Teacher Gift

What do you give a teacher on the first day of school?

It's a tough question to answer when you barely know the teacher, however you want to give a thoughtful gift. One of the things I looked forward to doing when the kids began school was getting teacher gifts. Teachers are truly under thanked when it comes to expressing appreciation for all the hard work they do throughout the year. This is something I have been excited about when thinking about back 2 school. Teachers work so hard throughout the year with little to no thanks. Gifting is my love language, so naturally I enjoy picking out gifts. I firmly believe in starting the year off with appreciation. This can be challenging for many to think of a gift for someone you barely know, so let me help you with some suggestions for purchasing a gift.

It doesn't need to be expensive.

Determine the total amount of money you want to spend on all your child(ren)’s teacher. Once you determine that amount, divide it by the number of teachers you have to buy a gift for. For example, my budget will be $30. I have two kids with 1 teacher each so each teacher will get a gift totaling $15. Don’t feel obligated to change this number if it feels too small. You will be amazed at what can be done with a small number. Even a card simply stating your appreciation is great. It doesn't need to be elaborate regardless of what your budget is. Remember this has to be duplicated for each child’s teacher.

It can be thoughtful even if you don’t know the person.

Here are some ideas for gift bags: nail kit, travel size lotion, travel size hand sanitizer, candy, etc. A combination of these items can make a great gift bag.

Places to find cool inexpensive items:

Target’s Dollar section at the front of the store, Five Below, Amazon.

Items to avoid:

scents, highly femine or masuline items. You don't know if the person is a floral or fruity person or if certain scents may bother them. Also, you aren't sure if the teacher likes doing their nails or even what color nail polish they would prefer. Male teachers may have a particular razor that they use, so no need in trying to guess and end up wrong.

Giftcards are ok.

If you look for a gift and you don't find something you really like for the teachers, a gift card is actually a really good option. A note and a gift card to Target or Amazon is great. I usually do not do gift cards but when in doubt, a gift card to a store that has a wide variety of things that can be purchased is good. Like a Target or Amazon, will allow the person to get whatever items they would desire. The gift card can be used towards a purchase of an item that the person already had intentions on getting.

Also, consider a joint gift for the principal, and support staff like secretaries, aides, janitors, nurses, cafeteria staff, etc. I know I did not mention this in the first section with the budget, however, if you have additional funds like $20 just for support staff, it would be a nice gesture to consider. These people are often forgotten but provide vital support to your child’s education and emotional well being. This is where an edible arrangement, a box of doughnuts or something like that would be nice.
