How to do a Hospital Newborn Photoshoot

So many of my friends are pregnant or just recently had a baby. Although the media has said there was no baby boom during the pandemic, my timeline says otherwise. Since we are still in a whole pandemic, there are still various restrictions that are in place at the hospital. Besides limiting visitors, many hospitals have not allowed photographers to come to each newborn room to take pictures. I want to share some tips on how to capture the first newborn photos in the hospital.

While you’re packing your hospital bag, think of items that you need for the photos and pack those items too. You don't want to take a chance that you will forget anything. What outfit do you want your newborn to wear? Is is dressy? Does it have a certain theme (sports, holiday, etc)? Take note of the size that your baby is projected to be in homestretch visits. This will determine if the baby will need a preemie, newborn or 0-3 size outfit. You don’t want your baby swimming in fabric. Once you decide on this it will help you to decide on props and decor.

The first item to consider is a decorative blanket. The outfit will determine what decorative blanket would look best. Generally speaking you don't want a busy pattern- a solid color or a small print would be good. A solid monogrammed blanket is also a great idea.

Second, purchase a prop that you can use. I chose a stuffed elephant. Keep your theme in mind and don't want to choose an item that is drawing more attention in the photo than the baby.

Last key to the baby shoot is to try different angles, poses, with props and without props. My favorite tool is portrait mode on the iphone. It gets a great shot every time. Don't be discouraged thinking you can't get quality photos with a camera phone. Ultimately having a photo for memories is what’s most important, not perfection.

I'm not by any means a photographer, I just love building my family photo album. When my son Drake was born, no photographers were allowed in the hospital. My husband and mom were barely able to be present for the birth (Delta variant rearing its ugly head). I'm just sharing some tips I used to help capture the moment in a fun way.

I couldn’t resist snapping a quick photo on the hospital blanket after his bath😍
